Research and teaching participation
Our practice actively promotes and participates in clinical research. On your patient registration form, consent is requested for your permission to use any valuable de-identified clinical data generated from your condition for medical research. Your participation is appreciated, especially if your condition is cancerous, as it is the only way to promote advances in the fight against cancer.
You may have contact with medical students during hospital admissions, as Dr. Salfinger, Dr Acton or Dr Ladanchuk teach medical students from the University of Western Australia and University of Notre Dame. Your permission to allow medical students to be present is appreciated.
This is the best way to encourage and develop our next generation of doctors.
If you have any objections to the above, please let our staff know early so we may organise alternative arrangements.

POST SURGERY FOLLOW UP
It is important to have a follow-up consultation after your surgery usually 6-8 weeks after your surgery. This will be co-ordinated by our practice nurses at the time your operation is organised or at the follow up call 1-2 weeks post surgery.
If you have had any tests or biopsies performed during your operation, your pathology results will usually be available within 7-10 days after your surgery. Dr Salfinger, Dr Acton, Dr Ladanchuk or our practice nurses will call you to inform you of the results, a copy of these and a letter will also be sent to your GP and interested parties, detailing the results and recommendations for further management and treatment. We are happy to send patients a copy of their pathology results as well.

ANAESTHESIA AND PRE OPERATIVE ASSESMENT
Your anaesthetist will contact you via telephone in the days leading up to your surgery to do a Pre-operative Assessment.
Pre-operative Assessment:
Most patients will be assessed over the telephone and in person on the day of their surgery. If there are specific medical issues, an appointment to see your anaesthetist may be necessary. If you have specific issues you would like to discuss in person with your anaesthetist before your surgery, they will be more than happy to arrange a time to see you. The pre-operative assessment will cover a number of areas related to your upcoming surgery and your anaesthetist will discuss specific plans for the type of anaesthesia to be provided as well as the management of your pain relief after your surgery.
Smoking and Alcohol:
It is preferable to stop smoking prior to your operation as this will assist your recovery and potentially decrease complications associated with the surgery. If this is not possible, then please do not smoke on the day of your operation.
Refrain from alcohol for at least 1-2 days prior to your surgery.
Nausea and Vomiting:
Many patients are worried about feeling sick after their operation. All patients will be given medication during their anaesthetic to prevent nausea and vomiting and patients at particularly high risk will have a number of medications and strategies employed to prevent this. Despite this, a small percentage may still feel sick afterwards and this may be difficult to control.
